Hi-tech Communication Services To Facilitate APEC Meeting Coverage
Journalists covering the 9th APEC Economic Leaders' meeting in Shanghai will be provided with a variety of hi-tech communication services, which will enable them to send news to their headquarters as quickly as possible.

Local telecommunication services in Shanghai have completed a series of projects to ensure an immediate and accurate coverage of the meeting, which include the ADSL broad-bands, quick Internet surfing systems and GPS systems.

A comprehensive communication system, composed of seabed and land optical cables, satellite ground receiving stations and mobile satellite receiver vehicles, has been established and will guarantee overseas journalists can communicate with home efficiently.

In each APEC meeting hall, broad-band and narrow-band television systems have been installed, and are directly linked with the APEC press center as well as many large cities in China and other countries.

At the Shanghai International Press Center, journalists can check press notices and news through the Internet at any time. The rate of the Internet interface may reach 100 M.

All major buildings in Shanghai have now been covered by a wide radio communication network, which will enable people to communicate easily by mobile phone.

Many special touch-screen computers have also been set up at APEC meeting halls and hotels, for people to check the information online and send E-mails.

Shanghai has cooperated closely with the APEC members in trade, investment and technology.

Of the total advanced technologies Shanghai has imported, approximately 73 percent came from the APEC members. Last year, the hi-tech trade between Shanghai and APEC members approached US$10 billion.
