Syria Protests Against Threat by Senior U.S. Official
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Friday summoned U.S. Ambassador to Syria Theodore Kattouf to deliver a protest against threatening remarks against Syria by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, diplomatic sources said.
The U.S. ambassador was also told that there should be a distinction between terrorism and legitimate resistance against foreign occupation, the sourced said.
Armitage said on Thursday that Washington could take military action against countries, such as Syria, in its campaign against terrorism if they did not comply with its demands.
The sources said Syria considered Armitage's remarks contradictory to a later statement by U.S. President George W. Bush.
At a news conference Thursday night, Bush said that Syria had expressed its readiness to take part in the war against terrorism and that Washington took that seriously.
