China Active in International Standardization MoveChina has played an active role in international standardization activities and has made a remarkable contribution, officials with the China State Commission for the Administration of Standardization said recently.China is now a member of more than 100 technical committees and over 500 subcommittees under the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and a member of 85 technical committees and 124 subcommittees under the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The country also works with the secretariats of one ISO technical committee and another five ISO subcommittees. Every year China sends several hundred experts to attend technical conferences organized by the ISO and IEC, to exchange views and discuss ideas with their foreign counterparts. It has also sponsored a dozen conferences of ISO and IEC technical committees, according to sources. By the end of last year, China had worked out and submitted approximately 40 drafts for international standards to the ISO and IEC, many of which have been accepted as internationally recognized standards. Altogether China has set nearly 20,000 national standards, over 8000, or 43.5 percent of which are international standards or advanced standards in some foreign countries. An increasing number of people are engaging in China's standardization work, officials say, adding that as many as 258 special commissions for standardization administration have been established across the country.
