CFA Changes Mind to Spur Players to Move Abroad

Since China has qualified for the World Cup 2002, the Chinese Football Association (CFA) changed its mind and is urging Chinese players to join high-level overseas leagues.

CFA vice president Nan Yong said on Thursday that the Chinese soccer body would no longer prevent its international players from moving abroad.

"It was just an expedient decision the CFA made to limit its national team members to go abroad during the World Cup campaign," he said. "And in my view, national players or their local clubs should subordinate their own interests to the overall interests when the national side needs them."

The CFA made a ruling early this year, barring their internationals of below 28 to transfer abroad in the face of the World Cup mission. After China reached their first ever World Cup finals last week, Chinese officials had a new idea.

"It will contribute a lot to Chinese soccer if more Chinese move to world top leagues and learn superb tactics and skills," Nan said.

Nan also stressed that the CFA only supports Chinese players to move to overseas leagues which are "above the level of the Chinese first division league."
