Shanghai Starts to Build Satellite Town

Shanghai has started to build a medium-size and garden-like town for half a million people to live and work outside the city proper.

Local officials said the new town will be based in Songjiang District in Shanghai, and will be the first of its kind in Shanghai and will be free of common problems facing big cities in China, such as a lack of parking lots.

Officials with Songjiang District said domestic and overseas investment in the district has been on the rise, including real estate and industrial development.

The total contractual overseas investment in the first eight months of this year in Songjiang reached 710 million U.S. dollars, ranking first in its suburban districts and counties.

According to the development plan of Songjiang, the future population of Songjiang will be composed of resettled residents from rural areas, downtown Shanghai and people from outside Shanghai.
