Nobel Prize in Literature Awarded to British Writer
The 2001 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to British writer V.S. Naipaul on Thursday for combining existing genres into a style of his own in works that compel readers "to see the presence of suppressed histories."
The prize is worth 10 million kronor (943,000 U.S. dollars).
Naipaul, born in Trinidad, was honored by the Swedish Academy in its citation as "a literary circumnavigator, only ever really at home in himself, in his inimitable voice."
