China Inaugurates New Commission on Standardization
The State Commission for Administration of Standardization was launched in Beijing Thursday.
State Councilor Wu Yi, on behalf of the State Council, extended congratulations to the new commission and also delivered a speech at the inauguration function of the new establishment.
The State Commission for Administration of Standardization, also called the State Standardization Administration, was designed by the State Council to provide unified leadership over standardization work in the country.
The new organization is authorized to excise administrative functions and take charge of the country's administration of standardization work. It will also be responsible for drafting and revising national standards for products.
Standardization, which was previously administered by the former state quality and technical supervision bureau, has become an increasingly important role as China has been expanding the market economy in depth and will soon be admitted into the World Trade Organization (WTO).
China has been active in participating in the world's standardization activities.
The country is now a member of more than 100 technical committees and over 500 subcommittees with the International Standardization Organization (ISO), and a member of 85 technical committees and 124 subcommittees with the IEC. It also undertakes the work at the secretariats of one ISO technical committee and another five ISO subcommittees.
Every year China sends several hundred experts to attend various technical conferences organized by the ISO and IEC, exchanging views and discussing ideas with foreign counterparts, while sponsoring a dozen conferences of ISO and IEC technical committees.
The country has also worked out and submitted some 40 drafts for international standards to the ISO and IEC, many of which have been accepted as internationally recognized standards.
