Nortel Networks Launches Intelligent Internet InitiativeNortel Networks announced the introduction of the Intelligent Internet initiative Wednesday in Beijing. The Intelligent Internet will power the Internet with a higher level of security, performance, agility and efficiency and will speed up Internet service delivery. The Intelligent Internet is based on Passport 8600 Layer 2-7 Switching Platform, promoted only by Nortel Networks. The switching platform is a multi-service high-capacity, carrier-class routing switch integrated with intelligent, content-aware Web switching technology from the Alteon product line. "Data traffic comes off the high-speed Enterprise highway and hits the Metro bottleneck," said Michael Li, head of network consulting & marketing at Nortel Network (China). "Our Intelligent Internet technology and portfolio will enable customers to break this bottleneck, clearing the congestion." The technology can help customers' leverage and maximize existing infrastructure while protecting their existing investment, increase bandwidth availability and network reliability in metro optical network and remove first-mile bottlenecks, thus enable content-rick, value-added services with personalization. However, according to Michael Li, the Intelligent Internet is by no means a "smart" Internet. It is only more secure, more efficient, more reliable and more agile. Nortel Networks is one of the largest telecommunications technology, product and solutions providers in the world and it is the biggest exporter in Canada.
