Hong Kong to Award New Fixed-line Licenses at Yarend

Hong Kong will award new fixed-line licenses at the end of this year as part of a two-year campaign to fully liberalize its fixed-line telecommunications market, according to a government official on Tuesday.

Carrie Yau, secretary for Hong Kong Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau, said in an interview with the Hong Kong Wenhui newspaper that the region's government will give out fixed-line licenses at the end of this year after a consultation with industry insiders and experts. She did not say how many licenses will be awarded.

Hong Kong's government pledged to fully open its fixed-line market by January 2003 allowing any qualified telecom operator to obtain a fixed-line license. Hong Kong now has four fixed-line operators and six mobile operators.
