Top Seed Seles Advances into Quarterfinal at Shanghai Tournament
Top seeded Monica Seles advanced into the quarterfinals Shanghai WTA tournament after beating Japanese Saori Obata 6-4, 6-2 Wednesday in Shanghai.
The top seed, who won a victory in last week's Japan Open, had no problems in dispersing her Japanese opponent.
Seventh-seeded Rita Grande of Italy also booked a berth in the quarterfinals after defeating Ludmila Cervanova of Slovakia 6-2, 6- 4.
In a first round match played on Wednesday, the fourth seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan beat Hungarian Zsofia Gubacsi 7-5, 6-2.
