NBA Coach Karl to Lead US Team in World Championship

George Karl, coach of the NBA club of Milwaukee Bucks, will take the helm of the US team for the World Basketball Championship slated for next year in Indianapolis, United States.

While the American team will be composed of NBA players, Karl said that "coaching has been my life, and to represent coaching at this level is an honor and privilege. I've always wanted to coach a USA team."

The Championship, slated on August 29 to September 8, will be held for the first time in the United States with the participation of 16 countries.

Apart from the United States, other participants are Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Lebanon, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Russia, Spain, Turkey, Venezuela and Yugoslavia.

Karl who played five seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, has a 625-418 record in his 14 seasons as an NBA coach. He also coached two years in Spain, two seasons with Cleveland, two with Golden State and seven with Seattle before going to Milwaukee in 1998.

The Americans won the world championship in 1994, 1986 and 1954. The last world title was won by Yugoslavia in 1998, with the United States taking the bronze with a non-NBA team.
