US Embassy in Cambodia Closed

The US Embassy in Phnom Penh was closed to the public Tuesday and will remain closed indefinitely, an official of the embassy said Wednesday in Phnom Penh.

The American embassy has enhanced security defense, and imposed a strict inspection on vehicles going into or out of the embassy since the September 11 terrorist attacks on the US, said an embassy official.

At the request from the US Embassy, the Cambodian police Tuesday strengthened security measures in the surroundings of the embassy, adding more military policemen to guard against possible incidents, he added.

US Ambassador Kent Wiedemann issued a notice Tuesday asking all American citizens reside in Cambodia and American tourists to be on alert and take notice of their safety.
