4 Killed in Tamil Rebels' Attack on Military Camp in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's separatist Tamil Tiger rebels attacked a military camp in northeast of the country on Wednesday, killing four air force men and wounding seven others, a military spokesman said.

Military spokesman Sanath Karunaratne said that about 200 rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) launched the pre-dawn attack on the air force base near the town of Morawewa about 10 kilometers west of Trincomalee city.

He said four air force men were killed while seven others were wounded in the fighting. The Tamil rebel casualties were not known.

The LTTE rebels have been fighting against government forces in the north and east of the country since 1983 in an attempt to create an independent Tamil homeland. The protracted ethnic war has claimed over 64,000 lives.
