Germany's Schroeder Leaves for US to Discuss Terrorism

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder left for the United States on Tuesday morning to discuss with US President George W. Bush about the fight against terrorism.

The German leader will met Bush in Washington and also U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan in New York during the one-day visit.

The United States held main burden in current actions against terrorism and Germany should show its "unlimited solidarity" with the Americans, said Schroeder before setting off.

Germany has repeatedly stressed its support to the U.S. " without reservation" and promised military participation when U.S. asks for it.

While military actions could only be a part of the fight against terrorism, Schroeder said, he would hold talks with Bush on other measures of fighting terrorism such as the interception of financial flows of terrorists and the use of diplomatic means.

Schroeder will also discuss with Secretary-General Kofi Annan what Germany could do to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan and "secure the survival of women and children."

"Germany will do its part to avoid humanitarian catastrophe," said Schroeder.
