Chinese Compatriots Rally to Promote Peaceful Reunification

Thousands of Chinese compatriots from across the world rallied Monday in Qingtian County, east China's Zhejiang Province, to voice their determination to fight against "Taiwan independence" and promote the peaceful reunification of the motherland.

Over 10,000 Chinese from both sides of the Taiwan Straits and some 600 from over 60 countries and regions of the world passed a declaration during the assembly, in which they called for concerted efforts of worldwide Chinese compatriots to fight with splittist forces, carry forward the good traditions and fulfill the great cause of reunification and realize rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

They agreed in the declaration that cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation in recent years have been conducive to the economic growth and mutual understanding.

The attempts of some Taiwanese politicians to act against the " one China" principle and preach the so-called "Taiwan independence " are firmly objected by all Chinese compatriots, at home and abroad, they said.

Representatives at the assembly urged the Taiwan authorities to accept the "one China" principle at an early date and open direct links in trade, transportation and postal services across the Taiwan Straits, so as to pave way for cross-Strait political dialogs.

Wang Daohan, president of the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, hailed the efforts of the Chinese compatriots in a congratulatory message to the assembly.

Qingtian County is the hometown of many overseas Chinese. Some 180,000 natives of Qingtian are now living in over 70 countries of the world.

Similar assemblies had been held in Germany, Japan, France, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands by non-governmental bodies of overseas Chinese before Monday's grand gathering.
