Arafat Urges Int'l Community to Help Halt Israeli "Terrorism"Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat Monday in Cairo called on the international community to pressure Israel to stop its "terrorism" against the Palestinian people.Arafat denounced Israel for continuing its brutal aggressions against the Palestinians as well as their towns and villages after a ceasefire reached between the two sides late last month. "We ask the U.S., Europe, Russia, China, Japan, the Arab and Islamic world, the non-aligned countries and the U.N. to make efforts to help implement the international resolutions and halt Israel's escalating terrorism against the Palestinian people," Arafat told reporters after his talks with Arab League chief Amr Moussa. Around 78 Palestinians have been killed and some buildings have been destroyed by the Israeli army since the truce was declared last month, Arafat said, terming Israeli actions as "terrorism against the Palestinians people." For his part, Moussa said that he exchanged views with Arafat over the "worsening situation" in the occupied Palestinian territories. Arafat held talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres on September 26 at the Gaza airport, in which the two sides agreed on a package of steps to contain the bloody clashes and resume mutual trust between the two sides. Despite the September 26 ceasefire agreement, Israel and the Palestinians failed to end the clashes which have lasted for more than one year and left more than 800 people dead, most of them Palestinians. Arafat arrived in Cairo earlier in the day for discussions with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on the latest developments in the Middle East. |
