Chinese, Guyanese Senior Officers Hold TalksFu Quanyou, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), held talks Tuesday with Michael Atherly, chief of defense staff of Guyana.Fu, also a member of the Central Military Commission, said that Chinese and Guyanese people have enjoyed traditional friendship, and Sino-Guyanese relations have developed smoothly since the two countries forged diplomatic ties 29 years ago. Chinese government values its relations with Guyana, and is ready to develop healthy and stable relations with the country in the new century, he added. Fu said that Sino-Guyanese military relations have developed momentum in recent years, and the Chinese army would like to promote cooperation with its Guyanese counterpart in all fields. On the settlement of the Taiwan issue, he said, the Chinese government adheres to the guideline of "peaceful reunification, and one country, two systems", and the Eight-Point Proposal made by Chinese President Jiang Zemin. "We have a sincere desire to strive for peaceful reunification, but we also are determined to make any necessary preparations to stop Taiwan's independence and any splittist activities," he said. He expressed appreciation for the support of Guyana on "one China" policy. Atherly said that Guyana values its ties with China, and hopes to strengthen bilateral cooperation. He believed the visit would enhance relations between China and Guyana and the militaries of the two countries.
