Dr. Larissa Barinova, president of the International Union of Building Centers (UICB), on Monday said at the UICB 2001 general assembly and annual conference that the housing construction in the 21st century should cater for the different needs of people from all walks of life, and attach more importance to sustainable development.

Dr. Barinova pointed out that housing construction is the driver of a nation's economy and also an important tool. Factors like industrialization, urbanization, energy utilizing, environmental protection, knowledge-based economy and information technology have greatly influenced people's everyday life and raised higher demands for home building.

She called for working staff in the field to study residential sites and better use land resources, build houses with high utility but low energy consumption, save non-renewable energy and develop new varieties of energy, and launch water recycling and processing systems.

Ye Yaoxian, chief engineer of China Building Technology Development Center, said that China has in recent years turned to contributing to sustainable development by improving house building technology.

He pointed out that China's home design in the 21st century should be based on four key principles, namely, affordability, livability, sustainability and adaptability.

Modern housing construction should consider the entire construction of the house as well as the housing equipment, pay more attention to green housing and use environmentally-friendly building materials for a safe and clean living environment.

In the meantime, special designs and housing facilities should be worked out for the elderly, the handicapped and children.

Experts say that China's housing construction professionals nowadays should not copy western styles and characteristics, but should plan and design to fit in with the Chinese people's cultural background and customs.

The country should launch a cost-effective and modernized housing industry, which also includes sound banking and insurance services.

The UICB 2001 general assembly and annual conference's main theme is "construction design for the future". More than 500 experts from home and abroad, as well as reprentatives from 20 architectural institutes in more than 10 countries attended.
