Boeing Plane Purchase to Meet Market Demand: Official
China Southern Airlines' purchase of 20 Boeing 737-800 jetliners is to meet the rising demand in the domestic civil aviation market, not an act on impulse, said Yan Zhiqing, chairman of the board of CSA.
On October 2, China announced that it had placed orders for purchase of 30 jetliners worth about 1.6 billion U.S. dollars. In addition to the 20 Boeing 737-800 planes CSA is buying, China Eastern Airlines (CEA) is buying four 737-700s, Hainan Airlines is buying three 737-800s and Shanghai Airlines is buying two 737-800s and one 737-700.
The purchase will cost CSA about 900 million U.S. dollars, said Yan. The single-aisle jets, to be delivered between 2002 and 2005, will replace older jets on domestic routes.
Yan added that his company would purchase another 20 50-seat ERJ-145 planes for service on minor air routes.
