S.Korean, US Presidents to Meet for Anti-Terror

Presidents of South Korea and the United States Monday agreed to meet for discussion of anti-terrorism cooperation and other issues during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit slated to open October 20-21 in Shanghai, China.

The agreement was reached in a 10-minute telephone conversation between South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and his US counterpart Georg W. Bush Monday evening, South Korean presidential spokesman Oh Hong-keun said.

In the conversation requested by US President George W. Bush, Kim voiced his support of the US-led military strikes against Taliban in Afghanistan, promising that South Korea will closely cooperate with the United States to eliminate terrorism from the world.

Kim also hoped that the two countries will have discussion as soon as possible on South Korean plan to dispatch a medical team and transport planes in support of the US-led anti-terrorism war against Osama bin Laden and Taliban.

In the spirit of the South Korean-US mutual defense pact, South Korea will not spare any cooperation and any support for the US war on terrorism and will participate in international efforts against terrorism, the South Korean president said in the conversation.

Early Monday, President Kim expressed his government's wholehearted support for the U.S.-led military actions against Taliban.
