Russia Launches Proton Rocket With Military Satellite

Russia successfully launched a Proton-K rocket carrying a Russian military satellite late Saturday, news agencies in Moscow reported.

The Kosmos satellite was launched from the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan at 20:45 p.m. Moscow time (1645 GMT), the ITAR-TASS news agency reported.

The satellite, which will become part of Russia's military satellite network, was successfully placed in orbit shortly afterwards, space officials said.

It was the 288th launch of a Proton rocket, 252 of which have been successful, space officials added.
