CMC Vice Chairman Meets Russian Guests

Zhang Wannian, vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission, met Sunday with Andrei Nikolayev, chairman of the Defence Committee of the State Duma of Russia, and his party.

Zhang expressed his appreciation of the contribution made by Nikolayev in promoting friendly relations between China and Russia.

He said that Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Russian President Vladimir Putin had signed a bilateral treaty promoting neighborly friendship and cooperation, a guiding document for Sino- Russian relations. It is expected the treaty will help build a long-lasting friendship between the two countries.

On the recent terrorist attack in the U.S., Zhang said that terrorism has become a big threat to world peace and stability. The Chinese government opposes and condemns any form of terrorism, and is ready to work with the international community to crack down on it.

He said that all nations should observe the U.N. Charter and the principle of international law. The U.N. Security Council plays an important role in this respect.

Nikolayev said that under the current circumstances, strengthening cooperation between Russia and China will benefit both sides.

Russia share the same view as China on terrorism, and hopes to further cooperate with China, he said.
