Mexico Fixes Venue for Next APEC Meeting

The 2002 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economic leaders' meeting is to be held in the Mexican city of Los Cabos in the northern Baja California state, the Mexican Economy Ministry announced here on Saturday.

Mexico will take over the rotating presidency of APEC next year. The Mexican government believes holding the next APEC meeting will provide opportunities for it to include topics to Mexico's interests in the international economic forum and explore new markets and economic partners for Mexican enterprises.

"Mexico will play an active role in international relations," the ministry said.

Mexico has always insisted on the necessity of giving political support to small and medium-sized businesses and promoting economic and technical cooperation.

APEC, comprising 21 members, was created in 1989 for economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.
