Nicaraguan President Cancels Middle East Visit

Nicaraguan President Arnoldo Aleman has canceled his scheduled trip to the Middle East for security reasons, said Foreign Minister Francisco Aguirre Sacasa.

The president's scheduled October 14 trip was canceled "because the situation in the Middle East has been heating up," Aguirre said in a statement published in newspapers here Saturday.

The minister justified the trip cancellation by citing concern for possible U.S. military actions in Afghanistan in retaliation for the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington D.C.

The U.S. government has pointed Saudi billionaire Osama Bin Laden who lives in Afghanistan, as the mastermind of the terror acts on the U.S.

"It seems that the moment of bringing Bin Laden to justice is approaching. That is why President Aleman has decided to cancel his trip to the Middle East," Aguirre added.

Aleman originally planned to visit Israel, Jordan and Palestine on a four-day trip.
