Cancer Rehabilitation Organizations Boom in ChinaA 73-year-old former teacher told a group of cancer survivors here he feels like a spry twentysomething despite his 26-year battle with lung cancer."To be calm and patient in tackling cancer is much better than being panicky," Zhang told those attending the founding ceremony of the Cancer Rehabilitation Club in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. China's first non-governmental cancer rehabilitation organization was founded in Shanghai in 1989. Its success had a great influence on the rest of the country and led to the start of other groups across China in the following decade. According to statistics from the World Health Organization, 10 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year and 6 million die of the disease. Now over 70 cancer rehabilitation organizations have been set up in China's 29 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. They sponsor a variety of activities and aid services for cancer patients to support their struggle against the disease. |
