Liaoning Sets High Targets for Tourism Development

Liaoning Province, in northeast China, plans to invest 15 billion yuan (about 1.8 billion U.S. dollars) in the development of the local tourism industry over the next five years.

With this investment, a total of 52 tourism projects will be built, according to the provincial plan for the tourism industry in the Tenth Five-Year Plan period (2001-2005).

According to the plan, the province expects to receive 70 million domestic and 5.5 million overseas visitors by the end of 2005.

By then, Liaoning will have earned a total of 200 billion yuan and one billion U.S. dollars in foreign exchange from tourism.

Rapid development of the tourism industry will create an extra 500,000 jobs for local people, according to the plan.

Making full use of local tourism resources, the province also aims to develop a number of famed tourism cities and name-brand tourism products.

The province earned 90 billion yuan (about 10.84 billion U.S. dollars) from tourism during the 1996-2000 period.
