Shanghai Trains WTO ProfessionalsWith China on the doorstep of the World Trade Organization, this commercial and industrial powerhouse in east China has launched a training program of senior professionals with proficiency in WTO affairs. The three-year program aims to train 100 senior professionals for the Shanghai municipal government, state-owned enterprises, professional service institutions and industrial associations, in a bid to provide human resources for the municipality after China's WTO accession. Shanghai, as a commercial center at the forefront of China's reform and opening-up drive, must train professionals who are proficient in international trade, WTO working languages and information technology, according to a local official source. "China will be in urgent need of such professionals," said Li Yueyin, director of the training section of a Shanghai-based company offering consultancy on WTO affairs. According to Li, all the 100 trainees are between 23 and 45 years old, with a good educational background and both English and computer skills. Training sessions will be held in China and abroad, covering basic concepts and principles of the multilateral trade system, China's participation and adaptation to economic globalization and WTO protocols, as well as research and case studies, said Li.
