2,500 Species of Desert Plants on Show in Beijing

Over 2,500 varieties of desert-based plants are on display at the Beijing Botanical Garden, including 5,000 cactuses and other plants recently imported from the United States.

The 2,500 desert plants include cactuses of up to six meters in height, leafless trees, a cactus 1.2 meters in diameter.

They are natives of various parts of Asia, Africa, America and Australia.

Located near Xishan Hill, in the western suburbs of Beijing, the 400-hectare botanical garden has a rain forest plants hall and a greenhouse for tropical plants and a hall for plants capable of catching small insects.

Built in 1956, the multi-purpose botanical garden is home to about 580,000 plants of 6,000 varieties.
