Japan Tightens Security Around Nuclear Plants, US FacilitiesJapan's National Police Agency (NPA) on Thursday tightened security measures around U.S. facilities and nuclear plants across the country to prevent possible terror attacks.The protected sites will increase to 450 from 350 after the deadly terrorist attacks in the U.S., NPA said. NPA noted that it is considering using body armor and bomb- disposal equipment to protect these sites. NPA also plans to request funds for anti-terrorism measures including more than 1,000 automatic rifles and bomb detectors in an extra budget for fiscal 2001. There are 163 U.S. military and non-military facilities to be protected, including diplomatic facilities, U.S. military facilities and ammunition depots, and 81 private sites such as U.S. companies and schools. The police are also beefing up security around 32 nuclear power plants and related facilities as well as government buildings and airport facilities across Japan, NPA said. Several thousand officers are expected to be mobilized for the operation while riot police and special anti-terrorism troops may be deployed if needed, according to NAP. |
