China Opposes All Forms of Terrorism, Envoy Says

A senior Chinese diplomat said in Washington Wednesday that China opposes and condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and it is China's basic policy to prevent and combat all terrorist activities.

Wang Yingfan, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, made the statement as he was addressing an open General Assembly debate on international terrorism.

China has already been party to nine out of the 12 international conventions against terrorism and active preparations are under way for it to join the two recently adopted conventions -- the International Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombing and the International Convention for the Suppression of Financing of Terrorism, he said.

The Chinese Government has dedicated itself to the promotion of regional and bilateral cooperation against terrorism and has, within the framework of the Shanghai Organization on Cooperation, concluded with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan the Shanghai Convention on Combating Terrorism, Separatism and Extremism.

"The Chinese Government is determined to fight resolutely, together with all other States, against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations," Wang said.

The week-long General Assembly debate, which opened here Monday, is the first international forum on terrorism since the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, which have claimed more than 6,000 lives.
