Former Military Airport Expanded for Civil Use

China has developed a former military airport on the Sino-Russian border into a civilian airport that can handle Boeing 737s, MD82s and other medium-sized passenger planes.

The airport in Heihe city in Heilongjiang Province in northeast China is 14.5 kilometers away from the Sino-Russian border and is the most northern airport in China.

The airport now has a 2,600 meter runway and offers flights to Beijing and Shanghai.

City officials expressed the hope that the opening of the airport will further boost the city's prospering border trade with Russia.

The expansion of the airport started last year and has cost nearly 200 million yuan.
