HK Celebrates National Day with Variety of Activities

HK Celebrates National Day with Variety of Activities
People in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Monday celebrated China's National Day with varieties of activities.

Lampposts and skyscrapers were decorated with multicolored banners and slogans as local residents celebrated a double holiday, the 52nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949 that coincided this year with the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival, when families enjoy the full harvest moon reunions and nighttime outings graced by colored lanterns.

On Monday morning, Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa and officials from the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong joined hundreds of local people for the flag-hoisting ceremony outside the massive convention center where China formally resumed the exercise of the sovereignty over Hong Kong in July 1997.

To mark the National Day, Hong Kong government offered free entertainment, including concerts by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and performances by the members of the Hong Kong Garrison of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. Many cocktail parties were also held to celebrate the event.

Gala fireworks will also be displayed in the evening.
