World Trade Center Missing Toll at 5219: Mayor

The number of people missing in the terrorist attacks on the twin towers of the 110-story World Trade Center (WTC) has officially dropped to 5,219, 422 less than the previous figure.

The confirmed dead rose to 314, of whom 255 have been identified, New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani told reporters Sunday.

New York authorities have adjusted the missing toll from time to time as duplicated reports occur. The figure is compiled on the basis of reports from victims' families, employers, rescuers, police, medical units and phone callers.

In the September 11 attacks, two hijacked passenger planes hit and toppled the WTC, with all 157 on board killed.

The disaster left a pile of ruins weighing over one million tons. It may take as long as one year to remove the debris, Giuliani said. So far more than 140,000 tons of ruble have been removed.
