U.S. Planes, Fleet Allowed to Pass Indonesian Waters: FMThe Indonesian government will allow planes and fleet from the United States and other foreign countries to pass the country's waters, Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayudha told reporters in Jakarta Sunday.However, he said, the foreign country's planes and fleet must use the assigned lanes. He was quoted by the Antara News Agency as saying that so far there are no request from the U.S. to use the Indonesian facilities to fight terrorism. Hassan made the comments after flying into Jakarta at the end of a two-week trip to the U.S. and Japan in which President Megawati Soekarnoputri met President George W. Bush at the White House. Hassan reiterated Indonesia's condemnation of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, but said U.S. must be careful in its retaliation. "In recruiting international support for the response that the U.S. may take, President Megawati asks that the feelings and the opinion of Islamic countries be noted and that the U.S. will not mix up Islam with terrorism," he said. |
