Four Arrested After Suicide Bomb Discovered in Colombo
Four people including two women have been arrested by Sri Lankan police after they discovered and defused a suspected Tamil Tiger rebel suicide bomb in capital Colombo, Police said on Sunday.
The suspects were taken into custody for questioning after a search operation near a public park in Colombo where a suicide jacket laden with high explosives was found Saturday, they said.
Police defused the three-kilogram bomb packed into a jacket similar to those worn by suicide bombers of the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels in their attacks.
Police believe that the LTTE suicide bombers had targeted a political leader or a security force commander.
The LTTE rebels said that one of their senior leaders called Colonel Shankar was killed on Wednesday by a claymore mine attack carried out by government forces in the rebel-held area of Oddusudan in the north.
However, the military denied any involvement in the killing of the rebel leader.
The discovery of the suicide bomb has triggered fear that LTTE rebels might launch a retaliatory suicidal attacks in Colombo following the killing of the rebel leader.
