Chinese Naval Ships Arrive in British Port

National Flag Waved in England
Two Chinese naval ships sailed on Sunday into the port of Portsmouth, southern England, for a four-day visit, the first ever to Britain by warships of the People's Republic of China.

The flotilla of the guided missile destroyer Shenzhen and the supply ship Feng Cang arrived at Portsmouth at 0930 GMT and received a warm welcome from hundreds of Chinese Embassy staff and other people of Chinese origin.

The British Navy is due to hold an official welcome ceremony Monday morning.

During their stay here in Britain, the navy soldiers from China and Britain are scheduled to hold a series of exchange activities, including football and basketball matches. The naval military band on board the Chinese ships will perform for the local people on Monday.

Britain is the second leg of the Chinese flotilla's four-nation Europe tour, which will also bring them to France and Italy.

They ended their visit to Germany last Friday.

This is also the first time for Chinese naval ships to visit Europe.
