Premier Hails New Progress in China's DevelopmentChinese Premier Zhu Rongji said in Beijing Sunday that in the year 2001, China has made a good beginning and achieved new progress in its reform and development.Amid the slowdown of the world economic growth, China has kept the momentum of economic development by adhering to its policy of increasing domestic demand, continuing to carry out its proactive financial policy and moderate monetary policy, accelerating industrial restructuring and the development of the western region, and rectifying the market order, Zhu said. In an address to a reception held here to mark the 52nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the premier said after protracted efforts, the negotiations for China' s access to the World Trade Organization have ended. New progress has also been made in the spheres of science and technology, education and cultural and social undertakings, as well as in the efforts to improve the legal system, Zhu said, adding that the nationwide battle against corruption and various criminal activities has been developing in depth. Beijing's success in its bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games has excited all Chinese people and made them more patriotic than ever, Zhu said. He congratulated all Chinese, including compatriots living overseas, on the festival and thanked all foreign friends who have concerned themselves with and supported China's reform, opening and modernization drive. The premier reminded the audience of General Secretary Jiang Zemin's important speech made on July 1 to mark the 80th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of China, saying that the Chinese people are seriously studying Jiang's speech and are determined to make the country even more beautiful. He reiterated the central government's firm support to the governments of the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, and pledged that efforts will be made to further strengthen economic exchanges between the inland areas and Hong Kong and Macao and to maintain their long-term stability and prosperity. An early settlement of the Taiwan issue for the complete reunification of the motherland is the common aspiration of all Chinese people, Zhu said. "We are completely confident and able to stop any attempt to split the motherland," he stressed. The premier reiterated China's adherence to its independent foreign policy of peace and said the Chinese government stands firmly against all kinds of terrorist activities.
