Reporter Publishes Book on Environmental Issues in W. ChinaMei Zhongtang, a reporter from the PLA Daily of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), recently published a book on environmental issues in the underdeveloped western part of China.Zou Jiahua, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) signed the book, while Qu Geping, chairman of NPC's Environmental and Resources Protection Committee wrote the foreword. Captain Mei, 32, has special interest in environmental protection, and has traveled 160,000 km to study environmental issues concerning the coastline, large rivers and the western provinces. The book is the result of his west China tour last summer with a group of local journalists organized by the NPC's Environmental and Resources Protection Committee. The western region has unique landscapes and many natural resources, but the deteriorating environment in the region has hampered not only its own development but national development as a whole, Mei said in a recent interview with Xinhua. Some local experts observe that an increasing number of local reporters are joining environmentalists to call for greater efforts in this area. Mei's book is expected to increase public awareness of the environmental situation in west China.
