Masterpieces of Traditional Chinese Painting on Show

An exhibition of traditional Chinese painting which opened in Beijing Sunday, reviews 20th century's painting and promotes traditional Chinese art.

During the three-week show, 551 works by 542 artists in the period from 1901 to 2000, will be on display, with masterpieces by 13 top painters including Qi Baishi and Wu Changshuo.

A total of 14 Chinese art institutions, including the China National Art Gallery and the prestigious Rongbaozhai Gallery, contributed to the exhibition with their own valuable collections totaling 281 pieces.

The paintings, selected by well-known experts, cover a wide range of subjects, reflect the history and represent the highest level of the traditional Chinese painting.

Experts say that in the 20th century, traditional Chinese painting underwent unprecedented development, leading to controversy in academic fields and the emergence of diversified genres and promising young artists.

Traditional Chinese painting has evolved its own modern style, which has been accepted worldwide.

A catalogue of the paintings was launched at Sunday's opening ceremony.

The paintings will be shown in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Macao. A symposium on traditional Chinese paintings will also be held from October 10 to 13 in Beijing.
