NY Mayor Opposes Rebuilding Exact Copy of Twin Towers

New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said that he opposed rebuilding an exact copy of the World Trade Center, instead suggesting that a memorial to the victims of the terrorist attack be the centrepiece of the reconstruction, according to local media.

He said that it had to be a beautiful, inspirational memorial because people had now to accept the fact that it was going to be the burial ground for many, many people. He added that he would like to see a mixture of residences and offices.

Nearly 6,300 people are dead or missing following the attack and Giuliani has warned that the remains of most of the victims will never be recovered.

The mayor said around25 million square feet (2.3 million square meters) of office space was destroyed in the attack and that 12 to 15 million square feet of office space could be rebuilt at the site.

He said the reconstruction commission tasked with the rebuilding effort should take soundings from across the community as to how the site should be rebuilt.
