Lottery Produces Fifty Millionaires in Chongqing

Since Chongqing's lottery began selling tickets last April, 50 local residents who wanted to become millionaires now are.

Among the millionaire tickets-holders are private business owners, laid-off workers, teachers, farmers, students, doctors and employees of state-owned and private enterprises, said a source.

The latest winner, a woman from downtown Chongqing, claimed a prize of five million yuan (US$600,000) last week.

Some of the lucky reported spending huge sums on lottery tickets before they finally won the big prize. Others said they won with their very first tickets, which cost two yuan (24 cents) each.

A local farmer who won two million yuan (US$241,000) donated 20,000 yuan (US$2,400) to help pay the medical expenses of a student.
