No Construction of Disney Theme Park in Beijing

There are no plans for a Disney theme park to be built in Beijing, the national capital's " Morning Post" reported Sunday.

News about the possibility of a theme park spread after Disney opened website address in Beijing in August.

Reports of the presence of Disney in Beijing also appeared in the media as Beijing Municipal Bureau of Tourism announced that a large theme park would be one of the three major tourist projects Beijing planned for the 2008 Olympic Games, said the newspaper.

It quoted a Beijing Municipal Bureau of Tourism official as saying that after the plan for building a large theme park similar to Disneyland was approved, some companies including Disney did express interest but "it does not necessarily mean Beijing will build a Disneyland."

According to the official, the bureau has not had any contact with Disney, nor have relevant departments included construction of a Disneyland in the work plan.

Disney president Robert Iger recently said in Hong Kong that there were no plans for construction, but some day, Disney would come to the Chinese mainland.

A Disney theme park being built in Hong Kong is expected to be ready for visitors in 2005.
