Three Missing, Eight Injured in Oil Barge Explosion on Yangtze

Three sailors are missing and eight others injured after an empty oil barge exploded on the Yangtze River near Anqing City in Anhui Province Saturday morning.

At press time the injured had been rushed to hospitals and search and rescue work was underway.

Chinese Minister of Communications Huang Zhendong was at the center coordinating ongoing search and rescue work.

The oil barge, with 39 sailors aboard, was one of the five barges being towed by a Nanjing oil transportation company tug boat when the explosion occurred, sources from the China Maritime Search and Rescue Center said.

Oil grids have been employed to prevent the spread of possible pollution.

The sunk oil barge is not obstructing the navigation channel, the sources said.
