Eight Killed, Six Missing After Southwest China Landslide

Eight people were killed in a rare landslide that struck Yongsheng County, in southwest China's Yunnan Province, Tuesday morning.

The tragedy, in which 18 people were injured and six are still missing, was caused by a heavy rainfall that lasted for some nine hours, local sources said.

Direct economic loses from the landslide are estimated at 13 million yuan (1.6 million U.S. dollars).

More than 30,000 local residents, some 800 ha of crops, many livestock and infrastructure facilities have been stricken by the calamity.

Rescue work is underway at press time.
