State Council's Executive Meeting Passes Draft Law, Revision

The recent 44th executive meeting of the State Council reviewed and passed, in principle, a draft law on road traffic safety and a revised draft of the law on cultural relics protection.

Representatives at the meeting all believe that it is necessary to enact a law on road traffic safety, as a good traffic order is conducive to economic development and the safety of the people and their property.

It was agreed that the law on cultural relics protection, first enacted in 1982, needs revision to better crack down on cultural relics smuggling and other illegal activities.

The meeting, presided over by Premier Zhu Rongji, decided that the two drafts will be submitted to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislative body, after further modifications.
