Online Tax Bureau in Haikou

The local tax bureau of Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan province, has used the Internet in fighting tax evasion.

Since the bureau launched a governmental Website three years ago, it has received 7,457 tip-offs from residents about instances of tax evasion. As a result, 4,400 leads have been investigated.

The Website, which was launched in October 1997, provides an instant check on the authenticity of invoices. If they prove to be fake, a report can be filed to the tax bureau.

With the likelihood of using fake invoices greatly reduced, the city has witnessed a great increase in tax revenue.
