Sudan Unlikely to Be Attacked by US: Ambassador

Sudanese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Hassan Gadir has said there is no possibility that his country will be attacked by the United States in its fight against terrorism.

After meeting with Zimbabwean Vice President Simon Muzenda on Wednesday, Gadir told reporters that Sudan and the United States have good relations on security.

"The United States was convinced that Sudan is a safe place," said Gadir. "Our relations are now much better and the United States has been initiating a peace agreement in the civil war in Sudan."

The prime suspect in the plane crashes of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon in the United States two weeks ago, Osama bin Laden, once lived in Sudan for some time.

Laden was in Sudan only as a businessman with nothing to do with politics, Gadir said.

The United States bombed a Sudanese hospital drug factory after the bombing of its embassies in East Africa in 1998 after suspecting that terrorists had come from Sudan.

A war against terrorism has been declared by the United States against the terrorists and those who keep them since the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Gadir, who came to Zimbabwe in August, said he would promote political and economic relations between Sudan and Zimbabwe.
