Terrorism Suspect Should be Tried in Lebanon, Not in US: Prosecutor General

Lebanese Prosecutor General Adnan Addoum said on Wednesday that a suspect alleged to be involved in terror attacks in the US should be tried in Lebanon, not in the United States.

Addoum told a news conference that Abu Mohjen, leader of a faction, called Osbat Al Ansar, or League of Partisans, is among the list of suspects of the U.S..

Abu Mohjen has been accused of engineering and funding an anti- government insurrection in northern Lebanon at the beginning of 2000.

Some 14 Lebanese soldiers and officers were killed in combat in the rugged northern Dinnyeh mountains to smother the insurrection.

About 19 rebels were killed and 30 others were arrested and are still being tried by a Beirut military court on charges of attempting to overthrow the government to proclaim Lebanon an Islamic state.

Abu Mohjen managed to escape.

Addoum stressed that he should be tried in Lebanon because two death sentences handed down in absentia against him would automatically warrant a retrial in Beirut.

Meanwhile, he said that he "has received a request from Interpol for data about 20 people within the framework of the investigation into the U.S. terrorist attacks."

"Lebanon will provide any data possessed about these people, including police records, fingerprints or transit visas," Addoum said.
