EU Leaders Leave for Washington for Talks on Anti-terrorism

The president and the executive chief of the European Union (EU) left here Thursday for Washington to meet US President George W. Bush to coordinate stand on global anti-terrorism actions.

Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt, whose country currently holds the EU presidency, and European Commission President Romano Prodi will visit the United States and Canada on September 27-28, according to announcements made separately by the Belgian Foreign Ministry and the European Commission, EU's executive arm.

The two would brief Bush on decisions taken by EU leaders at an emergency summit in Brussels last Friday.

At the summit chaired by Verhofstadt, the EU heads of state and government pledged to help the United States fight back against suspected extremists, their sponsors and financiers following the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.

The 15-nation bloc also adopted an EU-wide action plan to fight terrorism. The plan will include a Europe-wide search and arrest warrant and a common list of suspected terrorist organizations.

The two will also meet U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice at the White House, said the statements.

Another EU delegation, led by Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel, is currently on a four-day mission to Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Egypt to drum up support for the global anti-terrorism drive.
