Preparation for APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting 2001 Smoothly: FM Spokesman

The preparations for the Ninth APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting (ELM), to be held in Shanghai on October 20-21, is progressing soundly, and the meeting will be held as scheduled.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhu Bangzao made the remark at a regular press conference Thursday.

Zhu noted that China understands U.S. President George W. Bush' s postponement of his scheduled visit to the three Asian countries of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea because of the current situation.

He said that the two sides have agreed through consultation that Chinese President Jiang Zemin and President Bush will meet in Shanghai, and exchange views on Sino-U.S. ties and other issues of shared concern.

As the host, he said, China hopes all the leaders of the 21 APEC members will attend the meeting on schedule.
